Benji Schwimmer, winner of Season 2 of the hit Fox dance competition “So You Think You Can Dance” and brother of SYTYCD and Dancing with the Stars alumnus Lacey Schwimmer, has released the debut album of his band, The Weekend Forecast, on Spinshop.com. [http://theweekendforecast.spinshop.com/] The album, titled Sun, Doubt, and Scenic Routes, features 14 tracks (including a duet with his sister, Lacey) that offers a beach-pop sound a la a combination of The Rocket Summer and The Ready Set. Perfect roadtrip music that captures the beauty and fun of the title’s “Scenic Routes.”
Stand-out tracks include the single “I’m Done,” whose piano hook and catchy chorus will undoubtedly be stuck in your head for days. You’ll catch yourself humming to it without even realizing.
“Bury” reveals a darker side to The Weekend Forecast, its lyrics exploring the story of the sexual assault of an 8 year old. With an almost haunting acoustic guitar and violin prelude, which is echoed by a piano outerlude of the same melody, this song shows The Weekend Forecast is not all bubblegum and beach toys material.
The album is rounded out with the confidence-boosting “My Place,” its chorus boasting that “They say I don’t belong…but I will find my place, of that, I’m sure.”
Overall, an impressive effort for a debut album. With its catchy pop beats, yet meaningful and impressive lyrics, Sun, Doubt, and Scenic Routes is a must-have this summer. The Weekend Forecast is looking quite gorgeous, if I do say so myself.
